Surviving the most treacherous conditions on the river requires the river guide to be equipped with exceptional navigational skills and personal character, which safeguards the lives of others. Throughout my childhood, I loved going with my father every summer to run whitewater rivers all over the Western United States and, in the winter, Mexico, Central America, and South America. During those years, I learned so much more than how to get a raft through the twists and turns of a Class V rapid; I was schooled on my father’s secrets to success.
I poured the Kool-Aid into ice cube trays, inserted toothpicks, and called them “Cubesicles”. When I realized my neighbors were willing to plunk down double the money for my Cubesicles, a zealous entrepreneur was born.
By age 26, I had five babies. Yes, I am an over-achiever. My fifth was born on a rainy midnight in the front seat of a Volkswagen Rabbit in the hospital parking lot. I took him home the next day.
With one more mouth to feed, I searched for a way to provide for my children. Then one day, I realized my neighbors’ unattended fruit trees were going to waste, so I asked their permission to harvest them. I canned and bottled over 1,000 jars of fruits and vegetables, which fed my children and kept us going.
My eldest child (age 5) delivered the cheese to each front door while I nursed my days-old baby in the driver’s seat and my three middle kids squabbled in the back seat.
One sweltering August afternoon, while delivering cheese, we ran out of gas. Yep, just like in the movies. Hoisting my two youngest children in my arms and ensuring the other three held hands for safety, we walked along the side of the busy highway, searching for a gas station. I was petrified. Everyone was crying – including me. All I could think was, “This can’t be my life!”
As awful and humiliating as that experience was, it instantly became the impetus for my first official business. Instead of delivering the cheese myself, I realized I would make more money with less upheaval for my children if I collaborated with others. So, I franchised the cheese sales to several other moms and ran that business from my tiny kitchen desk. Voila! The grit and determination my father instilled in me saved our lives again.
I have always been a risk-taker, I’ve always loved adventure, and I absolutely thrive on new challenges. Being an entrepreneur offers me all of that, and I have embraced the role with great enthusiasm. I have also learned that being a successful entrepreneur requires the deepest level of determination and commitment.
For my most recent birthday, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro via one of the most challenging routes. I never gave it a second thought that I wouldn’t make it to the summit.
Trust me, each one took grit. For me, once I take that first step, I won’t quit until I get there, whether that’s figuring out how to provide for my family, climbing a mountain, or starting a new business.
Most recently, I discovered Artificial Intelligence (AI) when creating a glossary for my book, Brain to Bank: How to Get Your Idea Out of Your Head and Cash In. I decided to turn the book into an online course. Having done this before the “old-fashioned way,” I knew it would take at least six months and eight people to accomplish the vision I had in mind. I thought, I bet I could do it for faster with AI. I was correct, and my new business, Savantz.ai, was born.
